 Qualifications:

bulletComplete necessary training*
bulletWillingness to commit to 6 months service

*Training varies for each volunteer position
 

 Training:

The type and amount of training that is required of each volunteer is dependent on what type of work the volunteer wishes to do in the agency.  The following are the training requirements for the different types of volunteers within the agency:
 
bulletVolunteers/Interns of any age who are assisting with clerical/computer work, marketing, cleaning, house maintenance, or any other project that does not include working with clients of any SAFE Haven program must complete the following requirement:
bulletRead the Volunteer Manual and sign the Agreement of Compliance form associated with it.  This form will be placed in his/her volunteer file.
 
bulletAdult Volunteers/Interns (18 and older) who are assisting with any SAFE Haven program, and who will be having contact with program clients must complete the following requirements:
bulletRead the Volunteer Manual and sign the Agreement of Compliance form associated with it.  This form will be placed in his/her volunteer file.
 
bulletDemonstrate their knowledge in the following areas by completing tests in each area and/or completing the approximately 40 hours of basic training that includes watching video tapes of in-services on subjects that include but are not limited to:
bulletSuicide and Depression
bulletBoundaries
bulletAODA  I and II
bulletCommunication Skills  I and II
bulletChild Abuse
bulletDomestic Abuse
bulletSexually Transmitted Diseases / Infections and HIV
bulletResources/Referrals
bulletGangs
bulletSexual Assault
bulletActive Listening

** In order to successfully complete the Basic Training, the Adult Volunteer/Intern must watch all of the video tapes of the above mentioned in-services, complete an In-service Documentation Form for each training section, to be placed in his/her volunteer file, and complete tests on each section to make sure that each volunteer possesses the key information necessary to work with clients.
 

bulletAfter the Volunteer/Intern has completed the Basic Training, they may continue to train one-on-one with the staff of the program they want to volunteer for.
 
bulletPeer Helpers are youth who are interested in volunteering for any SAFE Haven program where they will have contact with the program clients.  These youth volunteers must complete the following training before they will be allowed to volunteer with any SAFE Haven program:
bulletRead the Volunteer Manual and sign the Agreement of Compliance form associated with it.  This form will be placed in his/her volunteer file.
 
bulletComplete the Peer Helper Training, which is a miniature version of the Basic Training that is required by the Adult Volunteer / Intern.  In order to complete the Peer Helper training, youth must watch the in-service videos and read the corresponding material for the following topics:
bulletCommunication Skills  I and II
bulletSexually Transmitted Diseases / Infections and HIV
bulletGangs
bulletAODA  I and II

** The Peer Helper must fill out an In-service Documentation Form for each training section to be placed in his/her volunteer file and be tested on the material to make sure that each volunteer possesses the key information needed to work with clients.
 

bulletAfter a Peer Helper successfully completes this training, they will then be trained one-on-one by the staff of the program they want to volunteer for.

bullet Bridge to Independence Service (BtI)
bullet SAFE Haven Youth Shelter
bullet S.A.F.E. Streets Outreach Program (SOP)
bulletSAFE Passage Transitional Living Program (TLP)
